Raumklang is a location-specific sound architecture, both created and explored by multiple visitors simultaneously. The installation invites you to experience 4-dimensional objects in space, which are perceived through hearing: your perspective and auditory experience will morph constantly as you navigate your way around and through these invisible sonic objects.
Over the course of a few days, the artists have recorded the soundscape inside and around the Muziekgebouw, creating a sound library containing sounds such as underwater recordings in the IJ, the passing trains and sounds emanating from the daily activities in this space. By playing and re-recording these sounds back in the Atrium they are interwoven with the characteristics of the space such as natural reverb, resonant qualities, and reflections.
Through precise and innovative tracking technology custom-built by the artists for this project, visitors are able to explore this sonic environment, providing a real-time augmented sonic intensification of the site. The sound architecture emerges as you tilt your head slightly, take a small step forward and then back again: What is this sound, and where does it come from? What is it telling me about this place I’m in? What other sounds are hidden where I can’t see them?
Van den Broek and Koek have been developing Raumklang for the past four years, with trials at V2_ (Rotterdam) and The Grey Space (The Hague). This exhibition at Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ is the premiere of this innovative way of experiencing art in time and space. Raumklang is presented in partnership with The Rest Is Noise | Muziekgebouw.
All FIBER 2021 tickets include a visit to the Raumklang premiere. Please reserve a timeslot through this link.
Raumklang is co-produced by V2_, Lab for the Unstable Media. Raumklang is supported by V2_, Lab for the Unstable Media, Creative Fund NL, Gerrard Street and STEIM.
Zeno van den Broek
He/him
Zeno van den Broek is a Dutch composer and artist whose works investigate and unsettle the relationships between people and fabricated surroundings. He utilises audiovisual means to create site- and concept-specific works which interrogate conventional conceptions of our experience of space. These works create visceral experiences that force new perspectives on the spaces they occupy or represent, whether these spaces are physical or digital.
Robin Koek
He/him
Robin is an enterprising sound artist who aspires to nurture a new cognitive understanding of the world surrounding us mediated through art and education. His work reflects on the environment integrating field recordings and site-specificity in composition and installation practice, researching the spatial nature of sound in both the physical and virtual realm.
